A desperate patient. A rumored cure. How far would you go
to find your fountain of youth?
Frank Paine is not your prototypical FBI agent. He’s an ex-Hollywood stud with a kinky past, an irreverent wise ass who craves forgiveness from the woman he loves. When a ruthless stalker uses Frank’s indiscretions to ensnare him in an erotic cat-and-mouse death match, his investigation goes places the FBI has never gone before. His hunt takes one tragic turn after another, until he finds himself facing an impossible dilemma. Someone will die as a result of his decisions, and it may be his soulmate. Or him.
King of Pain is a tautly written, absorbing page-turner. I usually can guess the ending to a police procedural by about the third chapter. This is not the case with Mr. Khan’s wonderful new book. Frank Paine is a character who is trying to take his life in a different direction. He experiences a crisis of conscience that makes him want to change his life entirely and become an FBI agent, but many of the people around him can’t forget that he was once a movie star who played an FBI agent. He has to grapple with the impression that he is only doing it for the publicity, but he also has to bury a deeply hidden part of himself that needs never be exposed if he wants any type of career. The twists and turns of the storyline take the reader deep into his past and his present troubles.
A second character, Roger Martin is also looking for redemption of sorts. He was a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist-now he’s a broken, sad man, living on anti-depressants and alcohol. He meets a woman that he calls “my angel” and he slowly raises from his personal darkness only to step into the middle of a puzzling mystery of his own.
The intersection of these two storylines happens in an unusual way and may end with either with the deaths of all involved, or redemption and new purpose.
Mr. Khan does a masterful job weaving these two stories together, and the plot flows logically from one event into another. I highly recommend this book.
